After overcoming technical difficulties, the organizers of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics resumed the production of artificial snow and promise to prepare the facilities for the snowboarding and freestyle skiing competitions in time for Livigno to host the ambitious competition.
Due to a broken pipe, the repair work at the Olympic facility lasted for five days, until December 20, snow production could begin. The preparation of the Olympic facilities is the responsibility of the SiMiCo company, and the head of the company, Fabio Massimo Saldini, emphasized that the production capacities are sufficient to produce the required amount of snow.
“We can guarantee 28,000 cubic meters of snow every day. All 53 [sniega] the guns are in perfect working order and we can produce 3,500 cubic meters of snow per hour,” emphasized Saldini. “All the problems that have arisen, which are normal in construction work, have been brilliantly overcome without lasting consequences.”
The Livigno snow park is expected to be put into operation by January 20, when the facility’s functionality is expected to be tested for several days in trial competitions.
The president of the International Skiing Federation (FIS), Johan Elias, called the delay in the construction of the Olympic facilities inexplicable during the Alpine Skiing World Cup stage in Valdiser. He emphasized that the organizers of the Milan-Cortina matches have a lot of work to do and their pace must be accelerated.

CONTEXT:
In order for the competitions in the Olympic disciplines planned for Livigno to take place in a properly prepared environment, natural snow is not enough. Artificial snow is also needed to create the necessary moistened mass.
Environmentalists oppose the production of artificial snow, stating that it requires a lot of energy and water.
The Winter Olympic Games will be held in Italy for the third time and for the first time in Western Europe since 2006, when Turin was the host. The games will take place in a large area in Northern Italy from February 6 to 22 in six clusters – Milan, Anterselva, Cortina, Bormio, Livigno and Predaco-Tesero.
