Messi Wins MLS MVP: Inter Miami Star Honored Again

Lionel Messi wrote his name back into the American soccer record books. The Inter Miami forward was chosen as the 2025 MLS Most Valuable Player, becoming the first player in league history to win the Landon Donovan Award in consecutive seasons.

The Argentine had an extraordinary campaign by winning the Golden Boot with 29 goals in only 28 games. This figure represents the second highest ever recorded in an MLS season.

Messi not only shined in the volume of goals, but he led the MLS in goals and assists.

In his time with Inter Miami he already has two league MVPs, two appearances on the MLS Ideal Team, two participations in the All-Star and a Golden Boot, among other recognitions.

Since his arrival in Miami in July 2023, Messi has transformed the club. He led the team to the 2023 Leagues Cup and subsequently guided the team to a historic Supporters’ Shield in 2024, with a record points tally. In 2025, his 15 contributions during the playoffs were key to the Herons lifting their first MLS Cup.

In addition to his achievements in American soccer, Messi continues to expand an unprecedented global record: eight Ballons d’Or, three The Best awards, two World Cup Ballons d’Or, six European Golden Boots and multiple distinctions in leagues and national teams.

In the voting for the 2025 MVP, Messi beat Anders Dreyer (LAFC), Denis Bouanga (LAFC), Evander (FC Cincinnati) and Sam Surridge (Nashville SC). The award, given since 1996, is defined by the vote of players, coaching staff and a media panel.

With this new recognition, Messi becomes the second player in MLS history to win the MVP twice, along with Preki, and one of the few to win it in the same year as the Golden Boot.
