The date is set. Spain, the reigning European champion, will face Argentina, crowned at the last Copa America, on March 27, 2026 during the “Finalissima”, the name given to this poster pitting the winners of the two continental competitions against each other.
The announcement was made jointly this Thursday, at midday, by UEFA and CONMEBOL, the South American confederation. The match will take place at Lusail Stadium, Doha (Qatar), at 9 p.m. local time. A choice which will undoubtedly delight the players and fans of the Albiceleste, since it is in this enclosure that the Lionel Messi gang lifted the World Cup, on December 18, 2022.
“The Finalissima celebrates football excellence by bringing together the best of European and South American football,” praised UEFA in its press release.
“This iconic match is more than a competition, it is a symbol of cooperation and respect between confederations, and an opportunity for supporters to enjoy a truly historic event,” added CONMEBOL President Alejandro Domínguez.
Argentina aims for treble
The meeting, which will take place less than three months before the start of the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, will make it possible to gauge the form of Argentina, world title holder, and Spain, one of the favorites of the North American tournament.
As a reminder, Argentina won the first edition of this intercontinental competition under its new name by easily winning against Italy in 2022 (3-0). Formerly known as the “Artemio-Franchi Cup”, the “Finalissima” had already been won by the Albiceleste in 1993 against Denmark (1-1 + 5-4 tab). The French team can boast of having won the very first edition, in 1985 against Uruguay (2-0).
Spain, which dominates the ranking of Fifa selections ahead of Argentina, will participate for the first time in this “super-final”. One of the main attractions of the duel will be the clash on the pitch between the legend Lionel Messi and the Spanish prodigy Lamine Yamal, the past and present of FC Barcelona.
