This Saturday, Inter Miami wrote an unprecedented page in its short history by winning the MLS, the North American championship, defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 at Chase Stadium, in Fort Lauderdale, home of Messi’s team.
The Florida team, founded by Beckham in 2018, thus won its first Major League Soccer title.
Inter Miami started better and reached 1-0 after eight minutes. Messi combined with De Paul, who released Allende and the Argentine’s low cross found Édier Ocampo. The Whitecaps defender cut the ball poorly and ended up deflecting it into his own goal.
Thomas Müller’s team returned from the dressing room with more ambition and equalized in the 60th minute through Ali Ahmed, after a good offensive combination started by Sabbi. The draw galvanized the Vancouver Whitecaps, who still hit the woodwork shortly after, but ended up paying dearly for their lack of effectiveness.
Inter Miami’s response came in the 71st minute and again at the feet of Messi. The Argentine recovered the ball in the offensive midfield, launched Rodrigo de Paul and the Argentine, isolated, shot to make it 2-1.
Already in added time, and with the Whitecaps team launched into the attack, Messi once again dismantled the Canadian defense.
The pass with the first touch left Tadeo Allende alone against Takaoka, and the forward closed the score 3-1 at 90+6m, scoring his eighth goal in the playoffs, a new competition record.
With this triumph, Inter Miami became the 16th team in history to win the MLS and the first representative from the state of Florida to lift the trophy.
