Merz Israel: Domestic Policy & Foreign Relations

Doing justice to Germany’s historical responsibility without acting as a schoolmaster – that is the constant challenge of German politics with regard to Israel. This task does not become any easier in the face of the constant, sometimes excessive Israeli struggle for self-defense, if at the same time one wants to support the International Criminal Court without reservation.

Seen in this light, a Federal Chancellor’s visit to Israel is always historic, and particularly so under these circumstances. The German reason of state to guarantee Israel’s security (one should not overestimate oneself here) does not mean support for any Israeli government policy.

Where it becomes concrete

Germany’s responsibility in its own country is tangible and enforceable. The government, the federal government and the states have a duty to do everything they can to ensure that Jews can live safely in Germany. Like hopefully everyone else too. This cannot be about criminalizing pro-Palestinian slogans or restricting freedom of assembly. Public safety must be guaranteed – actually a given.

Everyone must be able to take to the streets as they wish, practice their religion, and meet others peacefully. This should be part of the basic equipment of civilization. Everyone needs to know that. Otherwise it only belongs to it in terms of form.
