New Year at home Astro it will open in the best way. On Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 January, at the PalaCep “Don Aldo Matzeu” in via Talete, in Cagliari, the 26° Memorial Wheaton.
Two days of basketball, games and fun reserved for the Rookie categories, male (born 2014/2015) and female (2014/2015/2016), to remember Michael Wheaton,
young athlete from the Basketball School who passed away in 1999 due to an accident in the United States.
The men’s tournament will see the participation of the Astro, with two selections, San Paolo Cagliari and Basket Decimo. On the women’s side, in addition to the hosts, there will also be Antonianum Quartu, San Salvatore Selargius and San Paolo Cagliari. The planning of the tournament has been going on for some time now, with the clubs having joined without any doubt despite the festive period. Saturday 3 January will be the first non-stop day: the teams will be on the pitch from 9am to 8pm, with basketball games alternating with Sack Race and Log Game tournaments, competitions that will combine sport and laughter. The program will be repeated on Sunday 4th in the morning, before the “finals”, starting from 3pm, where the mixed tournament formula will return: men’s and women’s teams will face each other without any distinction based on their ranking position, giving life once again to an experiment already successful in the last edition of the Memorial.
Greetings
«Michael himself from up there will be happy to see himself affectionately remembered by his family and by all those who knew and lived with him – states Ermanno Iaci, honorary president of the Astro – We thank the participating clubs for having accepted our invitation to participate in a celebration of sport and friendship».
«There is no better way to open the year than with a new edition of our Wheaton Tournament – underlines Astro president Riccardo Fiorelli – A moment in which we remember a friend, gone too soon, through what was one of his passions: basketball. Doing it again in our CEP gym, our heart together at the PalaMellano in Sestu, after several years of waiting due to construction, has a special flavor. Now all that remains is to enjoy the fun of being together.”
«It is an immense pleasure to meet again and remember Michael with the twenty-sixth edition of the Memorial that Ermanno and his collaborators at Astro continue to organize with so much affection – he thanks the Wheaton family – And it is a great joy for us that this year, taking advantage of having two gyms at our disposal, the Segni Trophy can be held in the Sestu gym and the memorial dedicated to our Michael in the irreplaceable Cep gym».
