Still feverish collectively, Real Madrid ended the year by returning to success on Saturday on its lawn at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium against Sevilla FC, thanks in particular to its superstar Kylian Mbappé who equaled Cristiano Ronaldo’s record with a 59th goal scored in 2025. The Frenchman inscribed his name in gold letters alongside his idol in the great white book of Real Madrid with a 59th goal in 59 games, the same total than “CR7” in 2013, concluding the most prolific year of his career.
This record, celebrated with his teammates by paying tribute to the Portuguese, top scorer in the history of the Madrid club, did not, however, remove the doubts around his team, seriously shaken up and still saved by its immense goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. In the meantime, Real (2nd, 42 points), which had been beaten in its last two home matches, is temporarily coming back one step behind its eternal rival Barcelona (1st, 43 points), under pressure on Sunday at Villarreal (3rd, 35 points).
The Englishman Jude Bellingham opened the scoring with a furious header (38th, 1-0), but the Merengues trembled until the end, even in numerical superiority after the exclusion of Sevillian defender Marcão (68th). It took, once again, decisive interventions from Courtois (51st, 52nd, 56th, 66th, 90th+5) for the White House to maintain its advantage, while Mbappé had lacked realism (17th, 48th, 51st, 52nd) then success, by hitting the bar with his head (57th). This victory offers a new reprieve to Madrid coach Xabi Alonso, who will be threatened from the start of January in the event of a misstep against Betis Sevilla, first, then in the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia.
Double change of coach in La Liga
In the afternoon, Osasuna (12th, 18 points) gave itself some breathing room by largely beating Alavés (3-0), thanks to a late double from Croatian striker Ante Budimir. Promoted Levante (20th, 10 points) snatched a draw (1-1) in added time against Real Sociedad (16th, 17 points), still stuck at the bottom of the standings, far from the European places.
The two teams respectively announced in turn the appointments of their new coaches after the meeting: the Portuguese Luís Castro, recently sacked by FC Nantes, and the American Pellegrino Matarazzo, who worked for Stuttgart and Hoffenheim.
