Manchester City did what it had to do when visiting low-flying Nottingham Forest. City had a hard time, but thanks to a goal and an assist from Rayan Cherki they won 1-2. This is how City jumps to the lead in the Premier League, although Arsenal can still take over that leadership position later.
Would the Christmas menu still have been on your stomach? Manchester City were given a few days off before their match against Nottingham Forest, but in the first half Erling Haaland and co. unable to threaten the low-flyer in the Premier League.
From the organization and relying on long balls, Forest held out well, and City’s frivolous attackers got lost in the Bermuda Triangle of the struggling Forest. The result: a poor first half.
But in the second half there were soon more spaces. After less than 5 minutes, Rayan Cherki was able to turn around and serve Tijjani Reijnders. The Dutchman cleverly ran into space and put City ahead.
For Cherki it was already his 7th assist of the season and he almost made it 0-2 a few minutes later. But the ball did not go in via the hand of John Victor, the double of bencher Matz Sels, and the post.
On the other hand, Gianluigi Donnarumma had no recourse against Omari Hutchinson’s effort. He was released after a smooth attack at the far post and kicked the equalizer against the ropes.
City saw its virtual leadership position slip away. Pep Guardiola’s troops subsequently tried to regain that leading position, but continued to encounter a rock-solid defense. And when Phil Foden did get through, his goal was thwarted by goalkeeper Victor, who made a great save.
But just under 10 minutes before the end, Victor had to turn around again. On a corner kick, the falling ball fell at the feet of Cherki. He didn’t hesitate and took the ball in his stride. The ball went through a bunch of legs and hit the net, even though Victor was there for a while.
But the 1-2 was clearly on the board. For example, City (briefly) jumps over Arsenal to the lead in the Premier League thanks to the 18 out of 18.
