In the “Grand Prix” final selection program, Malinins was almost perfect.
He performed technically perfect seven (!) quad jumps, including an outstanding quad axel, an element that no one else has done before. Also, no one else has managed more than five quads in one program.
In Malinin’s performance, only one small flaw in the spin was found, which did not affect the overall impression.
Malinin’s optional program was evaluated with 238.24 points, surpassing his own world record by 9.27 points.
In the short program on Thursday, the American made a mistake on the first jump and earned 94.05 points to finish third. Although Yuma Kagiyama seemed stable in front (+14.72 points), the excellent second skate guaranteed Malinin the triumph in the “Grand Prix” final.
