Patrick Mahomes (30), the ‘best active quarterback’ in the National Football League (NFL), will return next season after suffering a major injury and undergoing knee surgery.
American sports channels ESPN and others reported on the 18th (Korean time) that Mahomes underwent left knee ligament fusion surgery in Dallas, Texas, USA.
Previously, Mahomes suffered a serious injury during a game against the LA Chargers on the 15th, rupturing both his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and lateral collateral ligament (LCL) in his knee.
Rehabilitation is expected to take about 9 months. Accordingly, it appears that there will be no problem participating in the opening game of the 2025-26 season. The NFL opens every September.
However, the problem is not the rehabilitation period but the recovery of skills. Knee injuries result in a decrease in athletic ability. Although it is a position where the head is more important than the body, a knee injury is bound to be fatal.
In particular, Mahomes is a quarterback who boasts quick feet. However, due to this injury, Mahomes is expected to play in the 2026-27 season without his quick feet.
Mahomes is the best quarterback in history, having been named Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the Super Bowl three times. He led Kansas City to wins in the Super Bowls in 2020, 2023, and 2024.
However, Kansas City, which was at its peak, lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2025 Super Bowl held last February, and was eliminated from the playoffs this season.
