Champions in 2020, 2023 and 2024, the Kansas City Chiefs will not reach the NFL play-offs this season, a first since 2014. To add insult to injury, the American franchise lost its star quarterback Patrick Mahomes to a serious injury.
This is what we call a nightmare night. By losing against the Los Angeles Chargers this Sunday (16-13), the Kansas City Chiefs are already eliminated from the race for the play-offs, a real anomaly in the NFL. As a bonus, the juggernaut American football team watched helplessly as its quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a serious injury.
Tackled from behind after coming out of his pocket at the very end of the match, the American star tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee. “An MRI confirmed that our quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, sustained during today’s game. Patrick and the team are exploring surgical options,” the Chiefs communicated after the game.
Towards the end of a dynasty?
Faced with this terrible news, Patrick Mahomes, 30, also reacted, without losing hope for the rest of his career: “I’m not going to lie to you, it hurts. But now, all we have to do is rely on God and fight day after day. Thank you to the Chiefs for their unwavering support and to everyone who contacted me and prayed for me. I will come back stronger than ever.”
Present in the NFL finals for a decade, Travis Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs were therefore eliminated from the race for the play-offs after their narrow defeat over the weekend. The Chiefs, champions in 2020, 2023 and 2024 and finalists in 2021 and 2025 in the North American US football championship, had not missed the final stages since 2014.
Their record for the 2025-2026 financial year is negative (6-8) after three defeats in a row. Their quarterback Patrick Mahomes had also been hampered by a left knee injury this season.
