Lucinda Brand recorded her ninth victory of the season in Sardinia on Sunday, but at a glance it was the most emotional for the lady from Baloise Glowi Lions. She crossed the finish line on the Italian island in tears, only to report later that evening that her mother had died.
Brand rode away from her competitors early. ‘There were some difficult sectors and Aniek (van Alphen, ed.) was held up a bit, so I felt like I had the momentum. “I immediately took off and wanted to see where that would take me,” she stated.
“At the beginning it felt like a big challenge, but at the end of the second round it was one against one,” says Brand, who ultimately took victory with a twenty second lead over Van Alphen and 33 seconds ahead of Shirin van Anrooij.
“Shirin was also there as a teammate and that automatically causes your competitor’s morale to drop somewhat,” Brand said about her teammate, who was on the podium of a cyclo-cross for the first time since 2023.

Striking moment for the TV viewers at that moment: Brand’s emotions when crossing the finish line. The Dutchwoman was in tears and crossed the finish line with a kiss. ‘This one was for home. The situation there is not ideal,” Brand said briefly in the flash interview.
Later that evening, Brand published a video with the accompanying text: ‘This victory is for you, mom 💙🕊️💫.’
Brand – a graduated rehabilitation therapist – was an informal caregiver for her mother for many years, who suffered a heart attack in 2003. We would like to wish Brand, her family and all friends and acquaintances a lot of strength in this difficult time!
