On Saturday, the “Latvijas Universitas” team defeated the “Gulbenes Buki”/BJSS team in extra time with the result 101:99 (24:26, 21:28, 17:20, 32:20, 7:5) in the match of the round of 16 of the “Užava” Latvian Cup basketball.
“Rīga Stradiņa University”/”VEF Rīga” or “Jelgava” will be the opponent of LU in the quarter-finals.
Brody Fox scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Riga players, Kristaps Gluditis also had 22 points, Jura Melikyans and Francis Neilands scored 17 points each, who had nine and six rebounds, respectively, while Daniils Smirnovs collected 13+7.
Edgars Kaufmanis scored 25 points for Gulbenians, Ralfs Aleksandrovs added 23 points, and Jānis Engers had 15 points.
On Wednesday, the first match of the round of 16 was played, in which “Ogre” beat the team of “Jēkabpils BA” 100:92.
“Rīgas zeļļi” and “Daugavpils Sporta skola”, “Liepāja” and “Salaspils”/”API Mobile”, “Valmiera Glass”/”Vidzemes Augstskola” and “Bauska”/”Līdums”, as well as “Rīgas Basketbola skola”/”Rīgas Juniori” (RBS/”Rīgas Juniori”) and “VEF Rīga” will meet in the other pairs of the round of 16.
Seven representatives of the Latvian-Estonian Basketball League (LIBL), 13 teams of the National Basketball League (NBL) and two teams of the third strongest league or Regional Basketball League (RBL) are participating in the tournament.
The final will be held on February 21.
Last season, VEF Rīga won the Latvian Cup for the fourth year in a row, defeating the Ventspils team 96:81 in the final.
The Latvian Cup competition for men’s teams resumed in 2021 after a 27-year break.
