Lavreysen Mentors Kimmann | Wiebes Wins – Cycling News

BMX champion Niek Kimmann participated in the sprint track cycling championships.

Visitors to the second day of the National Track Cycling Championships in Apeldoorn may have been surprised a few times.

Not because Harrie Lavreysen was once again supreme in the sprint. Not to see how Lorena Wiebes won the scratch or Lisa van Belle won the points race. The title of promising Joeri Schaper on the elimination race was striking, but not surprising.

The fans who were there can say that they witnessed the first steps of a great BMX champion in track cycling.

And, to top it all off, they saw how Wiebes once again expanded her hunting ground for titles and actually managed to beat the real powerhouses in the keirin.

BMX rider on the sprint

The men’s sprint tournament had a striking participant. Niek Kimmann, former Olympic and world BMX champion, was already sitting at Lavreysen’s kitchen table early in the morning to get some final tips for his first major tournament as a track cyclist.

Kimmann started the qualifications on borrowed equipment from the world champion, which traditionally consist of a 200-meter sprint with a flying start. The Achterhoeker made a rookie mistake: he made a mistake about the finish line.

  • Niek Kimmann started the day at the kitchen table with Harrie Lavreysen…
  • …then cycled towards the Apeldoorn cycling track…
  • …made a mistake in qualifying for the sprint tournament…
  • …and eventually lost to Loris Leneman in the quarterfinals.

The 29-year-old Kimmann has been associated with a switch to track cycling for some time, where he could possibly replace the now 37-year-old Roy van den Berg in the team sprint in the future.

Lavreysen wins

Kimmann achieved his first success in the quarter-finals, but fell after a decisive third stage against the talented Loris Leneman. Leneman would later finish third.

It should come as no surprise that the title became a prey for Lavreysen. The glutton from Luyksgestel, who last suffered a defeat at an (inter)national championship in 2019, defeated Daan Kool in the final.

Lavreysen also comes from BMX racing, but stopped because his shoulders were dislocated too often during falls.

Wiebes stunts with victory over keirin

The surprise of the second day at the National Championships was Wiebes’ victory on the keirin. All-rounder Wiebes has been the best sprinter on the road for years, won the World Cup on gravel and has also been winning world titles on the track for the past year or two.

But no one knew that she can also compete against the real powerhouses in the sprint tournament. Until today. Wiebes was the boss of Steffie van der Peet and Kimberley Kalee.

  • Lorena Wiebes was supreme in the scratch section.
  • Lisa van Belle beats Lorena Wiebes in the points race

That was not Wiebes’ only title. Earlier this week she became Dutch omnium champion in Alkmaar and on Saturday she also won the title on the scratch in addition to the keirin.

Lisa van Belle became Dutch champion in the points race. She beat teammate Wiebes.

Van der Peet beats Van de Wouw

The keirin title passed her by, but Van der Peet did take her second title this National Championship on Sunday: in the kilometer time trial.

  • The only 19-year-old Joeri Schaper surprises Jan-Willem van Schip with a late attack on the elimination race.
  • Steffie van der Peet defeated world champion Hetty van de Wouw in the kilometer.
  • Yanne Dorenbos and Vincent Hoppezak became Dutch pairs race champions.

19-year-old Joeri Schaper surprised with the title on the elimination race. Schaper, a member of the training team of the Belgian road team Soudal-QuickStep, kept fresh omnium champion Jan-Willem van Schip and scratch champion Vincent Hoppezak behind him.

Hoppezak later struck at the most prestigious endurance event in track cycling, the coupe race. Yanne Dorenbos and Hoppezak lived up to their reputation as European champions by taking the title.

The last titles will be awarded on Monday on the final day of the National Track Cycling Championships in Apeldoorn.
