The Latvian indoor football team will compete against Albania, Cyprus and San Marino in the preliminary round of the 2028 World Cup (WFC) qualification tournament, informs the Latvian Football Federation (LFF).
The preliminary round will be played in the form of a road trip in April next year in one of the member states. The winners of the first two places will enter the next round.
The teams that have passed the qualification preliminary round will join the 24 best teams in the UEFA coefficient ranking in the main round. Among the 24 participants of the preliminary round, the Latvian national team has the second best creator of the UEFA coefficient ranking.
In the basic round, the teams will be divided into groups of three national teams each and will play a two-round tournament with home and away games, determining the 20 elite round participants. Divided into groups of four teams each, also in the decisive Elite round, national teams will compete in two rounds with home and away games.
The organizers of the World Cup final tournament in 2028 have not yet been named. Europe will be represented by seven teams, but if a European country is chosen as the host, only six tickets will be allocated in the qualification.
