Latvian Hockey Team Starts Test Tournament With Convincing Victory
The Latvian men’s ice hockey team has started their participation in the “Kaufland” Cup in December in the Slovak city of Banska Bistrica with a brilliant victory. As the NRA portal informs, in the game played on Thursday, December 11, our national team convincingly defeated the Norwegian team with a score of 4:0. This success is significant as the first step in the preparation cycle before the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics.
Game Progress And Performance
The match turned into an intense and physically intense battle, in which both teams showed passion and fighting spirit. However, the goals remained a mystery for a long time as the first period ended with no change in the score. In the second period, the Latvian national team managed to break the resistance of the opponents, when at the end of the period, in the 34th minute, Deniss Smirnovs scored the first goal of the game. This goal gave Latvia the lead and the feeling that the game was in our hands. Smirnovs scored this goal after an excellent play with Mikas Indras and Renars Krastenbergs.
The third period became decisive, as Latvian hockey players demonstrated their skill and scored three more goals, cementing the victory. In the 46th minute, Rihards Melnalksnis doubled the advantage after passes from Roberta Cjunskas and Markus Komulas. At the end of the game, in the last three minutes, Roberts Bukarts and Kristaps Zīle scored a convincing 4-0 victory. Jānis Jaks provided an assist for Bukarta, but Mārtiņš Dzierkals spotted Zīle in front of the goal. This performance in the third period showed the team’s ability to turn pressure into goals and finish the game convincingly.

This tournament is the last and decisive test for the Latvian men’s hockey team before the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo. He also added that the final Olympic squad has not yet been decided, and these games in Slovakia will give an insight into potential candidates. This means that every game and every player is carefully evaluated.

Vītoliņš has praised the team’s performance in the minority, as well as the pace of the game, which was constantly increased during the game, despite the initial expectation of the result. This shows the team’s ability to adapt and improve their performance during the game.
The meaning of the tournament and the subsequent games
The “Kaufland” Cup is an important stage in the preparation cycle of the Latvian hockey team, providing an opportunity to test one’s strength against various European national teams, improve tactics and evaluate the performance of individual players. Last year, the Latvian national team took second place in this tournament, losing only to the hosts Slovakia.
The tournament, which takes place from December 10 to 12, brings together three national teams: Latvia, Norway and Slovakia in Banska Bystrica. After the victory over Norway, on Friday, December 12, the national team of Latvia will meet the hosts Slovakia, concluding their participation in the tournament. This game will be another serious test and an opportunity to demonstrate progress before the Olympics.
It is interesting that this is the third time this year that Latvia and Norway meet on the ice. In the previous two tests before the 2025 World Championship, the victories were split in half – in one game the Latvians won in extra time, in the second the Norwegians responded with the same result. This gives these matches extra intrigue and principled character.
