La Gantoise vs Club Bruges: Rising Tensions & Potential Clash

The climate is still tense between La Gantoise and Club Brugge after contacts with goalkeeper coach Bart Van Tornhout.

The consultant Franky Van der Elst understands anger. “It’s incredible that this comes on top of everything else,” he says in Het Nieuwsblad. “We first remove the coach and his assistant and then we will discuss with the goalkeeping coach. Club Brugge is not friendly.”

According to Van der Elst, it’s not just about the staff or the people. The problem goes deeper. “The rivalry between these two clubs is traditionally very strong,” he explains. “Added to this are tensions around the play-offs, where Club Brugge and La Gantoise have been head-on for years.”

Franky Van der Elst understands the anger of La Gantoise.

For him, the timing is particularly bad. “I understand very well that Sam Baro doesn’t find it funny,” says Van der Elst. “For Ghent, it seems like an accumulation of facts and at some point it inevitably ends up exploding.”

The reason why the Club turned to Ghent again is, according to him, not difficult to explain. “It probably has to do with Ivan Leko. He worked with Van Tornhout and must have been convinced of his qualities.”

Despite everything, he believes that the Club could have set a limit. “A club can also say: ‘excuse me, that’s enough’. Other clubs would have been much more careful. Today, Club Brugge added fuel to the fire.”
