The “Red Devils” took the lead less than half an hour into the game after Joshua Zirkzee’s shot bounced off Krejčí’s stomach and into the goal. The student of Zbrojovka Brno equalized at the end of the opening act after a corner kick.
“I knew no one was guarding me at all, which surprised me. I thought I might be able to find space for a header. I saw the ball going to the back post where I was standing and I knew I had to direct it to the post. I hit it well,” said the 26-year-old defender or midfielder.
Wolves got only the third point in the league season after a series of 11 defeats, they lose 15 points to the first non-relegation place. In the history of the English top flight, they are only the second team that did not win in the opening 19 matches. In 1902/03, Bolton experienced it.
“We are satisfied with the point at which we can build on to the second half of the season. Of course we want more, but we could also have lost a point. It is a good point. I am happy for myself, the team and the fans. We want to thank them not only for today, but for the whole year. We realize that it is not easy for anyone, but we stick together. It is very important for us. I hope that next year we will be the best not only in football, but also in life in general,” said Krejčí.
“We need to remain united, even if the situation is difficult, we will not lie to each other. We can only manage it together and with a positive mind and faith,” declared the former captain of Sparta Prague. “If you want to build self-confidence, you need points. How else are you going to get it when you keep losing? It’s difficult. The point with United is important. We have to take it and move on,” Krejčí said.
In previous away games at Liverpool and Arsenal, his team lost by a goal. “I hope that we showed the fans that we believe in each other. We didn’t get anything out of it in the past matches, now we do. We believe that it will change in the future,” Krejčí pointed out.
Wolves will enter the new year on Saturday with a home match against West Ham, for whom Krejčí’s teammate from the Czech national team, midfielder Tomáš Souček, will start. The first relegation position belongs to the London team. “I hope that we win for the first time at home and give ourselves and the fans energy,” said Krejčí, who is visiting Wolverhampton from Girona.
