A little over a year ago, Thanasi Kokkinakis showed himself in Berlin, where he was part of the World Team at the Laver Cup, but narrowly lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas. Anyone who was able to talk to Kokkinakis at the time still got the impression that Nick Kyrgios’ best tennis buddy was cautiously optimistic that the endless series of injuries would finally come to an end.
And the beginning of the 2025 season was certainly promising: in Adelaide, after winning two games, Kokkinakis was no longer able to compete in his quarter-final against Sebastian Korda. But at the Australian Open he put up a really big fight against Jack Draper. Kokkinakis narrowly lost in five sets, but that was no shame against Draper from the start (and especially a few months later).
Kokkinakis will win the title in Adelaide in 2022
But that’s it for professional tennis for Thanasi Kokkinakis in the 2025 season. The fact that the 29-year-old, who is ranked 452nd in the current world rankings, has now confirmed his participation in the 250s in Brisbane and Adelaide can almost be seen as a small Christmas miracle. Especially since the operation on the shoulder was quite complicated to carry out.
Kokkinakis has the best memories of Adelaide in particular: in 2022, he won his only title on the ATP Tour to date at the second ATP Tour 250 tournament. The next edition is probably more about seeing how resilient the battered body is again.
