The crew of the Latvian bobsleigh foursome with pilot Jēkabs Kalendas won a shared tenth place in the third stage of the World Cup competition in Lillhammer on Sunday, while the foursome piloted by Renārs Grantiņš finished in 12th position.
The first three places were taken by German crews. The first place was won by the leader of the first race, Johannes Lochner, whose piloted foursome totaled one minute and 40.1 seconds on the track. He was followed by Adam Amour in second, 0.26 seconds behind, while Francesco Friedrich was 0.28 seconds back to round out the top three.
Kalenda with pushers Mairi Kļava, Arni Bebriš and Matīsa Mikni was in 16th place after the first race, but the third best time achieved in the second race allowed them to move up to a shared tenth place in the overall standings, 0.71 seconds behind the winner.
On the other hand, Grantiņš with pushers Edgars Ungurus, as well as Dāvi and Lauri Kaufmani reached the seventh best time in the first race, but the 20th place in the second race caused him to fall to the 12th position in the sum of both races. Grantina’s foursome lost to Lochner by 0.78 seconds.
Lohner is the leader in the overall World Cup standings after four races of crews of four with 885 points, ahead of Friedrich by 40 points. Kalenda is in 15th place with 440 points, while Grantiņš is one position lower with 378 points.
On Saturday, Grantiņš’s crew showed the second result in the second race and won the 13th place, which is a career record for Grantiš, while Kalenda’s foursome was tied for 18th position. The Latvian crews only narrowly qualified for the second race.
