KAA Gent ended the year 2025 with a satisfying victory – the first under Rik De Mil. For KVC Westerlo, an undefeated streak ends with the defeat in the Planet Group Arena. Although things certainly could have turned out differently.
Rik De Mil and KAA Gent wanted to end the year with an important home win against KVC Westerlo. After the 0 out of 6 under the new coach, it was a bit of a challenge not to lose touch with the top 6.
They did this with a returning Wilfried Kanga and Abdelkahar Kadri. That left Dean and Gandelman on the bench. Adedire Mebude was given his debut in the starting line-up for the visitors, and the Gamecocks wanted to continue their undefeated momentum.
KAA Gent scores twice in five crazy minutes
Goodbye rays of sunshine, welcome to the biting cold of this Christmas season. The last match of the year was not exactly one for the history books, for the real party it was better to go to the Moose Bar a good kilometer away.
Halfway through the first half, the Buffaloes led 2-0 at home. Goore had finished off a beautiful collective action in a beautiful way to open the score after just over fifteen minutes, and just five minutes later Paskotsi stopped the match on a corner.
Although it could have turned out completely differently, because the best chances until then had been for Westerlo. They immediately came with high pressure and when Roef started playing football like a pancake, the egg was immediately hit.
The goalie put it right himself and received help from his defense on Ferri’s rebound. Even after a few attempts by a lively Mebude, he ultimately kept his nets clean, which ultimately made him important for De Buffalo’s.
On the other side, Ghent failed to complete the match before half-time, as Kanga targeted the post and the defense and Jungdal were also ready to prevent worse. And so it still remained somewhat exciting.
KAA Gent jumps over Westerlo in the standings
After the break, however, Westerlo could no longer get back into the game it was before the break. It played too slowly and was subject to the law that applies to everyone (everyone is equal before the law, at McLaren these are the papaya rules): whoever doesn’t score, doesn’t win matches.
With a satisfying three-pointer, KAA Gent jumps over Westerlo to eighth place in the standings and comes within one point of the Champions’ Play-offs, the Gamecocks end 2025 in tenth place. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
