Justin Herbert has a broken left hand and will have surgery Monday, Los Angeles Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh said after Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Harbaugh added that he doesn’t know if Herbert, who throws from the right, will have to miss any games. The Chargers will face the Eagles in Week 14.
Herbert injured his left hand during a 1-yard run. Herbert’s hand hit the field hard after a tackle from Jeremy Chinn.
He threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Quentin Johnston on the next play, giving the Chargers a 7–0 lead after their first possession.
Herbert missed eight games while receiving treatment in his team’s locker room. He was replaced by Trey Lance before returning to the game in the second quarter.
He completed 15 of 20 passes for 151 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in the 31-14 win over the Raiders.
The Chargers were able to count on a 59-yard run for a touchdown from Kimani Vidal. The running back finished the game with 126 yards rushing.
Geno Smith once again turned his attention to his favorite target, Brock Bowers, as the latter scored two touchdowns in the 10e campaign defeat for the Raiders.
The Chargers defense stood out with a nice defensive play in the second quarter. As Smith’s pass was about to leave the field, Donte Jackson jumped to return the ball in bounds and his teammate Tony Jefferson was able to catch it to save the turnover.
Frustration is starting to set in for the Raiders’ miserable season as Maxx Crosby took a penalty for shoving to the ground after a Herbert play.
Los Angeles ranks second in the American West division behind the Denver Broncos (10-2) and ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs (6-6).
Gardner leaves, but gets a reassuring diagnosis
Indianapolis Colts cornerback Sauce Gardner injured his left calf early in Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans and was forced to leave the game.
Gardner was in coverage away from the action on the Texans’ second play when he was injured on a non-contact play. He remained on the ground for a long time while the trainers tended to him. He then limped off the field with the help of trainers.
Gardner headed to the Colts locker room to undergo a little more in-depth examination. He was seen on the sidelines with a walking boot on his left foot.
After the game, the defensive player confirmed that he suffered a calf sprain and not a more serious injury to his Achilles tendon.
The injury comes in Gardner’s third game with Indianapolis since being acquired in a dramatic trade with the New York Jets.
Gardner, the fourth overall pick in the 2022 draft and a two-time first-team all-star, was traded to the Colts for two first-round picks and receiver Adonai Mitchell.
