John Robertson Death: Nottingham Forest Legend Dies

Robertson is “a true legend of our club,” the club wrote “with deep pain” in a statement. He will “never be forgotten with his incomparable talent, his humility and his unwavering loyalty to Nottingham Forest.”

Robertson “passed away peacefully on Christmas morning after a long illness, in the presence of his wife and family. Our only consolation in our grief is that his suffering is now over,” the family wrote in a message that Nottingham Forest shared on social media: “Robbo was valued by many as a football hero, but to us he was simply John and Papa – the family man: kind, loving, funny, cheerful and loyal.”

Greatest successes with Nottingham

Robertson had spent most of his career at Nottingham. With the club, the winger, who was once described by his coach Brian Clough as “the Picasso of our game”, won, among other things, the English championship (1978) and the European Cup twice (1979, 1980) after promotion to the first division. He also played for Derby County for two years.

Robertson also made 28 international appearances for the Scottish national team, with whom he took part in the 1982 World Cup in Spain. After his playing career, Robertson worked as an assistant coach at several clubs on the island.
