Unequal boxing duel: influencer Jake Paul breaks his jaw
Anthony Joshua once defeated Wladimir Klitschko and became heavyweight world champion. Now the Brit competed against an influencer in his comeback. For him the duel ends in the hospital.
The influencer Jake Paul paid for the unequal boxing match against former heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua with a double broken jaw. The 28-year-old showed an X-ray of his badly damaged jaw on social media the night after his defeat against the Brit, who was eight years his senior. The American obviously said jokingly that he wanted to compete against Mexican boxing star Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez in ten days.
Paul had previously lost to Joshua in Miami by a technical knockout in the sixth round, but stayed on his feet for an unexpectedly long time. “It wasn’t the best performance, it took a little longer than expected,” said Joshua after the fight, paying respect to his opponent. Paul was proud and assured that he also wanted to fight for a world championship belt in the future.
Paul gets tired after the fifth lap
The lucrative fight, which was stylized into a spectacle, lasted longer than many experts expected in advance. In his 14th official fight, Paul was keen from the start to evade the much more experienced, bigger and heavier Joshua. The Brit couldn’t really shine and had problems hitting the quick Paul.
Only when Paul got tired in the fifth round did the Briton hit increasingly harder and sent the American into the ring ropes and to the ground several times. Joshua ended the duel with a hard right in the middle of the sixth round. “I gave it my all. I’ll come back and win again,” said Paul.
Comeback for Joshua – and now against Fury?
Joshua spectacularly defeated boxing idol Wladimir Klitschko in 2017. Four years ago he had to give up his world championship belt to the currently best heavyweight Oleksandr Usyk. He also lost in a rematch. Joshua last got into the ring in 2024 and failed there against compatriot Daniel Dubois.
Now he was back in the ring for the first time – and at the end he challenged Tyson Fury to a long-awaited British duel.
High salary in the millions for both boxers
Joshua also agreed to fight Paul because there is a lot of money at stake. There has recently been talk in several media outlets of a high salary in the mid-eight-figure range for both Joshua and Paul.
On paper, Joshua, who was almost 13 centimeters taller and significantly heavier, was the overwhelming favorite in an unequal duel. Influencer Paul had only lost one fight in his career so far and, among other things, defeated the much older boxing legend Mike Tyson unanimously on points last year.
