The President of the Ivorian Football Federation wanted to pay tribute to the memory of Jean-Louis Gasset, who died this Friday. The Montpellier was on the Elephants bench for almost two years between 2022 and 2024.
In Ivory Coast we also remember Jean-Louis Gasset. While the CAN 2025 is in full swing in Morocco and the Elephants successfully entered the competition this Wednesday (1-0 against Mozambique), the president of the Ivorian federation wanted to salute the memory of the Montpellier.
“The disappearance of Mr. Jean-Louis Gasset constitutes a significant loss for Ivorian and international football. An experienced technician, a man of duty and principles, he left his mark on the technical supervision of the Elephants of Côte d’Ivoire through his expertise, his professional rigor and his commitment to the service of football,” writes Yacine Idriss Diallo in a communiqué published this Friday.
CAN with Ivory Coast
After a failed stint on the Bordeaux bench, Jean-Louis Gasset took a two-year break in his coaching career but bounced back in Ivory Coast in 2022. With the Elephants, he participated at home in the 2023 edition of the CAN, postponed to January 2024 after severe bad weather the previous summer. But after a 4-0 loss against Equatorial Guinea in the second match of the competition, Jean-Louis Gasset resigned and gave way to Emerse Faé, still in office. After a complicated group stage, Ivory Coast ended up winning its third CAN.
But the president of the Ivorian federation has not forgotten the former deputy of Laurent Blanc at PSG. “His time at the head of the national team contributed decisively to the success of the Elephants during the African Cup of Nations ‘Côte d’Ivoire 2023’, making his action a lasting part of the sporting history of Côte d’Ivoire.”
Before concluding: “In this painful circumstance, the entire Ivorian football family presents their most saddened condolences to the biological family of the deceased, to his loved ones, to the Montpellier Hérault Sport Club, as well as to the entire international football community. The Ivorian Football Federation bows with respect to the memory of Mr. Jean-Louis Gasset and prays for the eternal rest of his soul.”
