Italian Paralympic Chief Under Investigation for Abuse

The Italian Paralympic Committee (CIP) he decided to appoint the Italian Paralympic Winter Sports Federation (FISIP) as commissioner, less than two months before the start of the Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina. The CIP said it did so to ensure the smooth functioning of the body and support for its athletes in view of the Games, at a time when the FISIP is affected by an investigation of sports justice on its president, Paolo Tavian, accused of psychological abuse and discrimination against the women who worked with him, and in particular against the former general secretary Sonia Nolli.

According to the federal prosecutor’s office, there was a very difficult and stressful working environment within FISIP precisely because of Tavian’s behavior. In recent weeks the prosecutor’s office had requested the so-called referral, i.e. that act of sports justice with which it formally requests the initiation of a disciplinary procedure (broadly comparable to the indictment in ordinary justice). The CIP said that in any case the decision to commission FISIP is not a personal judgment against Tavian “but a necessary act of institutional responsibility”.
