The first edition of the Ischgl Trophy went to a German: Tommy Haas. The 47-year-old beat Dominic Thiem 6:3 in the final of the show event in the Tennis Dome.
The decisive factor was a break to make it 5:3, which Haas confidently brought over the line. Thiem, who defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the tie-break on Saturday, remained in second place. The winner received 25,000 euros in prize money, Thiem received 15,000.
Haas had already progressed in the semi-finals, compatriot Mischa Zverev had given up due to injury. Third place went to Tsonga, who only played an exhibition match against Michael Berrer on Sunday.
Thiem said in the Tyrolean daily newspaper: “I just wish I could play as well as Haas in 15 years.”
The premiere of the Ischgl Trophy took place on Sunday parallel to the skiing and attracted around 2,000 spectators. Organizer Edwin Weindorfer was satisfied with the start, but announced further adjustments to the supporting program for future editions. Thiem should continue to be a driving force behind the event in the future.
