FIFA President Gianni Infantino has once again brought a further development of the offside rule into play. It is conceivable that the rules could be completely reinterpreted or partially adapted.
The goal is football “more offensive and attractive” the Swiss said at the World Sports Summit in Dubai. A possible rule revolution should result in game interruptions “to a minimum” be reduced. The plan is not new; FIFA director Arsene Wenger has been pushing it forward for some time.
More Advisory Boards are already dealing with the topic
The issue is also on the agenda of the rules enforcers of the International Football Association Board (IFAB): In October, the IFAB advisory committee voted for “further analyzes and additional tests” pronounced. The next IFAB meeting is scheduled for January 20th in London.
“We’re looking at the offside rule, which has evolved over the years and currently requires the attacker to be behind or level with the last defender”said Infantino: “Perhaps in the future the player will have to be completely in front of the defender to be considered offside.”
In other words: There would no longer be offside if only one leg or one arm was in front of the last defender. The focus is on the millimeter decisions using semi-automatic offside technology, which have recently been discussed several times in the Bundesliga.
