Infantino Defends FIFA: Football’s Global Reach

The entire football world is eagerly awaiting the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Anyone who wants to be there will have to pay a lot of money. FIFA boss Gianni Infantino defends ticket prices for the upcoming World Cup.

The World Cup in the US, Canada and Mexico seems to be of unprecedented scale. The ticket prices are also unprecedented and have already attracted a lot of criticism. FIFA did not give up.

The world football association responded by offering fans of the seeded countries cheaper Supporter Entry Tier tickets of 51 euros, including for the final. However, only a very limited number of these are available, making the measure seem like a drop in the ocean.

Gianni Infantino on the defense

FIFA president Gianni Infantino spoke out about the tickets at a football conference in Dubai. “In fifteen days we have received no fewer than 150 million ticket requests,” he said, quoted by Het Laatste Nieuws.

“That’s 10 million ticket requests per day,” he calculated. “This shows how powerful the World Cup is. In its almost 100-year history, FIFA has sold a total of 44 million tickets. So in two weeks we could have sold out 300 years’ worth of World Cups.”

“Imagine that. That’s really crazy, despite everything that can be read about our ticket prices,” he snapped. “But this is just how expensive such tickets are. It is crucial that our income goes back into sport. Because without FIFA there would be no football in 150 countries.”
