On November 17, the Chinese Basketball Association approved the first registration application of Hangzhou Jingwei Basketball Club. Hangzhou Jingwei has therefore become the fourth five-a-side professional men’s basketball team in Zhejiang Province after Zhejiang Chouzhou, Zhejiang Guangsha and Ningbo Fubang.
The team’s name is very meaningful and is taken from a unique geographical coordinate – the intersection of 120° east longitude and 30° north latitude in Dayuan Town, Fuyang District.
“When the Jingwei is completed, the competition will shine.” According to the club’s general manager Sun Yi, the name “Jingwei” not only takes the meaning of “accuracy”, but also hopes that players can complete every shot, pass, and dunk accurately; they also hope to use basketball as a pen to write a passionate chapter of Hangzhou basketball, making “Jingwei” a new coordinate of the city’s basketball spirit.
The team’s coach is former Zhejiang Guangsha player Liang, and its players include Zhu Rongzhen, Lai Ke, Si Kun, Guo Kailun, Huang Xu, Zhang Hao and many other former CBA players, as well as former NBL champion Gao Yuxiang. In terms of foreign aid, former NBA Rockets player KJ McDaniels, Latvian forward Buyankov Artems, and Puerto Rican defender Jordan Howard, who played for the CBA Ningbo team last season, have also joined. The new NBL season will start on December 20 and end on April 27 next year, with a total of 14 teams participating. The regular season adopts a home and away double round-robin system, which means that Hangzhou Jingwei will play at least 13 games at Fuyang’s home court.
At the expedition ceremony, Wang Zhigang, vice chairman and secretary-general of the Zhejiang Basketball Association, congratulated the team on behalf of the Basketball Association for their expedition to the NBL. He said that Hangzhou Jingwei is the only professional basketball team named after Hangzhou and the only NBL league team in Zhejiang Province. The birth of Hangzhou Jingwei is an important expansion of Zhejiang basketball territory, and it is also a milestone for Fuyang and even Hangzhou basketball to enter the professional arena.
