Hamburg Car-Free District: Bike & Foot Only

The company wants to build two buildings with 58 apartments, for which there is dedicated parking for 20 trucks and 140 classic bikes.

According to her, the rental offer is suitable for people who do not own a car “out of conviction”, the residents of the district should rather ride a bike or walk, writes Bild newspaper.

“I have doubts about whether the company has the right to ban renters from owning a car,” said lawyer Thomas Pliester, who is a member of the task force of the German Bar Association.

According to him, this is an invasion of privacy. The tighter the situation on the housing market, the more serious the demand seems, he added.

The plan was also criticized by the chairman of the Hamburg Tenants’ Association, Rolf Boss. According to him, the housing association in Münster made the same attempt in the past and it was unsuccessful.

“Everyone has gone crazy. This is pure bullying and we have to stop this kind of illegal practice immediately,” added Richard Seelmaecker, deputy chairman of the CDU parliamentary group in Hamburg.

According to the company, the first tenants should move into the two- to five-room apartments already in February.

But the planned car ban sparked so many protests that it pulled rentals from the public market. Even so, according to his statement, he continues to insist on traffic and parking rules in the district.
