Güira: Football Domination & Legacy

Despite developing an impetuous qualifying stage, in which they scored and led, from the first to the penultimate date, the crown of the first category provincial soccer championship was not won by the boys from Bauta, but by those from Güira de Melena, who defeated them in the semifinals and then beat Caimito in the title discussion.

After stringing together five consecutive victories, Bauta fell on the sixth and final day against Caimito, finished second in his group and had to face Güira in the crossroads to define access to the final; then, he gave in again.

Thus, those from the Potato Capital fought for the crown with the Caimitenses, equally superior to their opponents from Candelaria.

The eleven from Güireño made good the well-known saying that “those in front will not go far…” if those behind step on their heels and win the decisive one.

In the defining match, each team scored a target: Dairon Medina, for those from the largest food producing municipality; Adonis Ramos, for his opponents. And we had to go to prison! In that lottery, the first ones imposed their law… or their success… or their steeliest nerves (3-1).

“It was a great party in honor of Cuban soccer day and a worthy game,” declared Joel Iglesias, deputy sports director of the Artemisa Soccer Academy and statistical manager of the event.

Bauta and Candelaria did not celebrate the challenge for third place. Behind them were: Eide Julio Díaz, Bahía Honda, San Antonio de los Baños, Guanajay, Artemisa, San Cristóbal, Alquízar and Mariel, in that order.
