Grêmio Restructures Football Staff After Castro Hire | News

Grêmio have dismantled their permanent backroom and overhauled the football department following the appointment of Luís Castro. According to Globo.com, only fitness coach Rogerio Dias and assistant Marcel Cardozo remain in post.

This week, assistant coach James Freitas and goalkeeping coach Mateus Famer were let go. Freitas was in his second spell since July 2024, while Famer returned in January after a stint at Vasco and had spent 12 years in the club’s academy.

The departures were to make room for Castro’s team. The Portuguese is bringing six staff members, two assistants, two fitness coaches, a goalkeeping coach and a performance analyst.

Before announcing Castro, a week ago Grêmio also dismissed three senior staff. Fernando Lázaro, responsible for performance analysis, logistics supervisor Pedro Aguiar, at the club for 13 years with eight in the first team, and football supervisor Marcelo Rudolph departed. Executive Luís Vagner Vivian also left to make way for Paulo Pelaipe.

Castro’s backroom comprises assistants Vítor Severino and Pedro Mané, goalkeeping coach Daniel Correia, performance analyst Nuno Baptista, and fitness coaches Nuno Cerdeira and Roberto Júnior, Betinho. Apart from Betinho, formerly of Flamengo and Brazilian, all are Portuguese.

His group is double the size of Mano Menezes’s setup, which included assistants Sidnei Lobo and Thiago Kosloski and fitness coach Flávio de Oliveira.
