Božidar and Julijana Prevc have five children, four of whom were or are highly talented ski jumpers.
Peter won ten years ago Four Hills Tournamentis an Olympic champion, won 24 World Cups and also the overall ranking in this series in 2016.
Cene won Olympic silver in Beijing in 2022 with the Slovenian team, which also included Peter. He was junior world champion.
Domen, on the other hand, is dominating the scene this season and easily won the opening competition of the Four Hills Tournament Oberstdorf.
And Nika, a sister of the boys, is currently the phenomenon of women’s ski jumping.
Only Ema, the youngest of the sibling quintet at 16, decided against a career on the ski jump; she is a ballet dancer.
Twice, three quarters of Team Slovenia consisted of members of the ski jumping family from Kranj, not far from Planica, the valley of ski jumps in the Julian Alps. Božidar Prevc (pronounced Pre-Utz), the father, is a jump judge and owner of a furniture store. The mother, Julijana, is a librarian and always tried to ensure that her children continued their education through reading.
Božidar Prevc initially fulfilled his son Peter’s wish to become a ski jumper. He always drove the little one to Planica for training. Which encouraged his two younger brothers and later his eldest sister to also try out being human fliers. Now they form a ski jumping dynasty that has never been seen before in this sport.
Two parents, five children, four world-class ski jumpers – how is something like that possible? First of all, all Prevcs are considered particularly daring. At the beginning of his career, Domen in particular took a huge fall from the jump after jumping off. Added to this is the physiognomy: all Prevc siblings are not too tall and are naturally slim. And in
Ski jumping The formula still applies: Light and small flies well.
At the age of 17, Domen Prevc emerged like a force of nature among the world’s elite. In 2016 he won up to tour four out of seven competitions, but did not manage to maintain this form throughout the major event – he came ninth in the overall ranking. It wasn’t until March 2019 that he won another World Cup event – this time in ski flying. Before and after he was in a constant crisis.
In an interview with ZEIT, Prevc says that these years took a toll on him: “I went through really dark times in terms of sport. I sometimes asked myself what the hell I was doing on the jumps and losing,” he says. “The change came last year on the tour in Innsbruck. I was fifth after the first round and felt: Oh yes, it’s working again. After that, things actually finally started to look up again.”
Prevc has adapted its style. He no longer jumps off as boldly as he did in his early days; he now makes the transition into flight very smoothly. Although he still places himself very far between his skis, they now offer him more air cushion due to a slightly changed position. He also doesn’t tie his shoes tightly, which makes him flexible in terms of foot position. This mixture is currently the best among ski jumping men. The competition is amazed and unanimously appreciative.
