When Fortuna’s number one, Jachym Gerginov, brought the number one duel against Wilhelm Büchner to a victorious conclusion despite being 14:16 behind in the deciding set, the unexpected result of a perfect weekend for the Regensburg team was certain. After around five and a half hours of play, the badminton regional league team had taken the lead in the Northeast group with two clear victories against TSV Niederwürschnitz on Saturday (8:0) and HSG DHfK Leipzig on Sunday (7:1).
The still unbeaten Fortuna, which has only lost one point in Dillingen, is now two points ahead of the former second division team Leipzig, which has not lost any points so far, and which had already lost its first point on Saturday in Neuhausen. Department head Dieter Sichert was never in danger of becoming nervous. His team won the games too quickly and smoothly.
Impeccable women’s record
The fact that the strongest possible squad was available was worth it. On Saturday against the Saxons, the Regensburg team only lost a single set. “And that in women’s doubles, our strongest discipline,” reported Sichert in a good mood. There is not a single defeat involving women in Fortuna’s interim balance sheet. “And we achieved that with four women,” says Sichert happily. The sisters Radka (2 singles, 7 doubles, 4 mixed victories) and Klara (2/5/4) Silhava as well as the Croatian Jelena Buchberger (4/4), who was used with Klara Silhava this time, and Eliska Bilkova (1/2/1) are responsible for this flawless and impressive record.
Specially rolled out mats
In order to emphasize the special nature of the game, those responsible for Fortuna once again rolled out the good old blue mats, which made the badminton court more visible in the North Hall on Isarstrasse and were well received by the participants. “We were given these as a gift by the city at the German championship in 1990,” says Dieter Sichert, remembering the most glorious days of Fortuna. These two days were also successful at the moment: the fact that Valerian Eckert, number three, gave up the only point against Leipzig only briefly annoyed him and was easily bearable.

The balance sheets of the four top men at Fortuna also make impressive reading. Number one, Jachym Gerginov, has won eight of his nine singles and six of nine doubles. Daniel Dvorak is undefeated in singles in five appearances, has lost only two of seven doubles matches and won all four mixed appearances. Valerian Eckert has seven singles wins in nine games, a 5-2 record in doubles and a 2-0 record in mixed doubles. In addition, oldie Vojetech Selong only has ten wins in singles (1), doubles (4) and mixed (5).
Everything looks like promotion to the second division could become an issue. Dieter Sichert exercises caution. “We don’t always have our best line-up available.” First of all, Neuhausen II, third in the table, is the next guest on January 17th.
