Flamengo Deal Stalled: 3 Key Reasons

Filipe Luís is Flamengo’s priority, but plans B and C are already analyzed

After winning almost everything at Flamengo in 2025, Filipe Luís gained value. Therefore, Rubro-Negro is having difficulty renewing the coach’s contract, which ends next Wednesday (31). See the three reasons that stop the commander’s ‘ok’ from the club’s board of directors.

WHAT SALARY FILIPE LUÍS WANTS?

Having come from the Flamengo academy, Filipe Luís has one of the lowest salaries among the Brasileirão Série A coaches. So, the coach expects to be valued. Furthermore, the commander wants to have the main connection in the country, above Abel Ferreira, from Palmeiras, the current leader of the ranking.

In Flamengo’s offer, Filipe Luís would be close to these numbers, but it is barely enough to surpass Abel Ferreira. Rubro-Negro understands that the appreciation is satisfactory and does not intend to give in. In other words, it is in the hands of the former full-back.

DID THE BUSINESSMAN DISTURB?

Flamengo has been negotiating a contract renewal with Filipe Luís since April. At the time, talks were moving well towards extending the contract. However, the coach, during 2025, became managed by Jorge Mendes and everything changed.

Mendes, who worked with Filipe when the coach was a player, is one of the main businessmen in the world of football and is often famous for ‘toughening’ negotiations. The agent’s entry into the business irritated Flamengo’s management, who understand that the professional’s influence has hindered conversations.

FILIPE LUÍS IN EUROPE?

Filipe Luís has never hidden that he dreams of working in Europe. Therefore, a long relationship with Flamengo could hinder the coach’s project. Rubro-Negro’s idea is to sign with the coach until the end of 2027, that is, two years of contract.

On the other hand, Filipe Luís still does not have a license to drive in the main leagues on the planet. Furthermore, the European season is halfway over. Therefore, the coach should not accept proposals from the continent at the beginning of the year to pick up a work in progress.

WHAT IF FILIPE LUÍS DOESN’T STAY?

Flamengo already has plans B and C for a possible failure in the renewal of Filipe Luís. One of the names in their sights is Artur Jorge, ex-Botafogo and currently playing football in Qatar. During his quick stint in Brazil, the Portuguese won the Brasileirão and the Libertadores in 2024.
