Human rights organization FairSquare complained to FIFA’s ethics commission about its president Gianni Infantino, accusing him of violating the “integrity and reputation” of football in his repeated pro-Donald Trump actions.
“By explicitly supporting Trump’s political agenda, both nationally and internationally, he puts the integrity and reputation of football and FIFA itself at risk”, maintains the NGO.
The recent and sudden creation of the FIFA Peace Prize and its attribution to the North American leader, without knowing the requirements for the honor or its evaluation panel, as well as any other detail, is just one of FairSquare’s criticisms, which also points out that Infantino does not fulfill his “duty of neutrality”.
FIFA’s ethics commission already admitted to having received the complaint on Monday, but has not yet commented on its content.
The closeness between Trump and Infantino, who campaigned in his favor in the elections that brought him back to the White House in January 2025, is questioned regarding several actions that exceed the functions and responsibilities of the FIFA president.
For the human rights NGO, the attribution of a distinction of this type “to a political leader in office constitutes a flagrant violation of FIFA’s duty of neutrality”, established in article 15 of the organization’s code of ethics.
In the complaint, FairSquare asks the ethics committee to understand the role played by Gianni Infantino in the issue of the FIFA Peace Prize, a process whose framework has never been clarified by the body that oversees world football.
The complaint also recalls the fact that, in October, the Italian-Swiss president of FIFA publicly defended that Donald Trump should receive the Nobel Peace Prize, in addition to expressing support for his domestic political agenda.
The organization considers it “natural and appropriate” for Infantino to establish a “functional and diplomatic relationship” with Trump, however, it considers that the director has exacerbated his duties, committing several violations of FIFA’s ethics and impartiality.
The United States, Mexico and Canada will host the football World Cup in 2026.
