Zvonimir Boban spoke about the current situation at FIFA and does not spare Gianni Infantino. The former Croatian international once worked closely with the Swiss on the transformation of the organization, but those days seem long ago.
According to Boban, Infantino has completely lost his way and is acting against the interests of FIFA. In an interview given to GuardianBoban said he always had confidence in Infantino. Between 2016 and 2019, he worked as deputy secretary general at FIFA and co-led an organization that he then considered “anxious and lost”. Together with Infantino, he tried to put FIFA back on track.
This collaboration initially went well, but Boban is now happy to no longer work for FIFA. He calls Infantino’s behavior “disrespectful and irresponsible”, particularly in view of next year’s World Cup in Mexico, Canada and the United States. The Croatian is worried about the direction the organization is taking.
A political shift causes discontent
It is above all the political turn that Infantino is taking according to Boban which offends him. Boban referred to the drawing ceremony where Donald Trump received the FIFA Peace Prize. “I couldn’t watch. It’s painful that it’s becoming so political when before it was always focused on football and footballers,” Boban said.
Boban says Infantino no longer prioritizes football. “Gianni has always been reliable and responsible, but he doesn’t realize what he is doing to himself and to FIFA now. He thinks he is doing his best, but is doing exactly the opposite,” said the Dinamo Zagreb president.
The former Milan player stresses that FIFA should not be a political organization. According to him, Infantino is harming the reputation of the association by placing political interests above football.
