FC Groningen has included the option in the agreement with Thijmen Blokzijl. The 20-year-old defender is now under contract in Euroborg until mid-2027. The Pride of the North and the youth international will discuss the future in the second half of the season.
Despite his young age, Thijmen Blokzijl has already played 90 official matches for FC Groningen. The central defender provided one assist and scored once. That historic goal was also the most talked about goal of the almost ended calendar year 2025, because Blokzijl scored the 2-2 against Ajax in a packed Euroborg last season in the ninth minute of extra time.
His goal on the penultimate matchday of the 2024/2025 season in the VriendenLoterij Eredivisie ensured that the Trot van het Noorden had a chance of participating in the play-offs for European football with the won point, which ultimately did not work out. And at the same time, Blokzijl’s late equalizer decided the title battle between Ajax and PSV in the Eindhoven team’s favor.
