British boxer Anthony Joshua is in a stable condition following a fatal car accident in Nigeria on Monday.
He is recovering from minor injuries in the hospital. Joshua’s spokesman confirmed that two of his long-time friends and coaching staff, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, were killed in the crash.
“Anthony Joshua suffered minor injuries in the accident and was taken to hospital, where he is undergoing examinations.
He is in a stable condition and will remain in the hospital for observation. We would like to ask that everyone respect the privacy of Joshua and the families of the accident victims in connection with this shocking and overwhelming event,” DPA quoted Joshua’s spokesman as saying.
The accident occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway when the car in which the former world heavyweight champion was traveling collided with a lorry. According to a witness to the accident, the passenger next to the driver and the person sitting next to Joshua died on the spot.
Preliminary findings indicate that the Lexus Jeep may have exceeded the legal speed limit. The FRSC added that the car lost control during an overtaking maneuver and crashed into a stationary truck at the side of the road.
Earlier this month, Joshua knocked out social media content creator and boxer Jake Paul. Next year, the former Olympic champion should meet in the ring with his compatriot and another former world champion, Tyson Fury.
Joshua’s last fight before his duel with Paul was a fifth-round knockout loss to another Briton, Daniel Dubois, in September last year.
