F1: Portuguese GP Return & Technical Demands – 2027/28

Good news for Portuguese Formula 1 lovers. The Portimão circuit in Portugal will return to the World Championship calendar in 2027, the championship promoter announced on Tuesday, instead of the Dutch Grand Prix.

A two-year agreement was concluded between Formula 1 and the International Autodrome of the Algarve of Portimão, linking the Portuguese trace until

Located in the far south of Portugal, the 4.6 km circuit “offers drivers a technical challenge with dramatic altitude changes, culminating in a descent towards the final right turn which leads to the pit straight”, explains F1 in a press release.

For the moment, no date has yet been announced but the Portuguese GP must replace that of the Netherlands contested at the end of August and already guaranteed to disappear from the calendar after 2026.

A spectacular circuit for drivers

The Autodromo Internacional do Algarve made its debut as an F1 World Championship circuit in October 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, but left the calendar in 2022. Englishman Lewis Hamilton is the last driver to win at the track (in 2021).

Before that, Portugal hosted its first GP in Porto in 1958 before visiting the Monsanto circuit (on the Spanish border) in 1959, then the Estoril circuit, near Lisbon, between 1984 and 1996.
