Football is the most important side issue, even for Remco Evenepoel on an internship with his new team Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe. The Belgian is a big fan of Anderlecht and Arsenal. The latter will meet eternal rival Club Brugge tonight in the Champions League. Wouldn’t Evenepoel prefer to be in Bruges? “I’m not going into that stadium anytime soon,” he laughs, just like with his prediction.

Under the Spanish sun, Remco Evenepoel is laying the foundation for his career at Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe.

But wouldn’t he rather be in Bruges tonight? There, the team of his heart Arsenal – next to Anderlecht, of course – plays against blue-black.

“I’m not going to enter the Bruges stadium anytime soon,” Evenepoel laughs baring his teeth. “We’re going to take a look here. Sven Vanthourenhout is a big supporter of Club, I brought my Arsenal jersey. I’m ready for tonight.”

Our compatriot hopes that Arsenal wins, but he has praise for what the Belgian teams are achieving in Europe. “Bruges did immensely well against Barcelona. It is impressive to see how well the Belgian teams are doing in the Champions League, including Union yesterday.”

So there will be no anti-supporters on stage this evening: “In Belgium I will definitely be against Bruges, but not in Europe.”

A hopeful message. What is Evenepoel’s forecast then? “0-4,” he shares with a wink. The laughter in the background says it all.
