Television rights have always been a fundamental component of European football, but they are losing their primacy. The last one UEFA European Club Finance and Investment Landscape report confirms it.
In 2023 the revenues of the main European clubs reached 26.8 billion euros, for a growth of 12% in 2022 and 16% in 2019 (pre-pandemic), with a forecast of further growth in 2024. However, television revenues only grew by 3%, compared to an increase in other commercial revenues, which grew by 39%.
Between 2009 and 2024, revenues from Broadcasting grew by 4.8 billion euros for +131%, but if between 2009 and 2019 the growth was 322%, between 2019 and 2024 it is only 3%. On the contrary, commercial and sponsorship revenues see an increase of 6 billion between 2009 and 2024, for a +166%, which translates into a +125% between 2009 and 2019 and a +39% between 2019 and 2024.
Serie A sees aggregate revenues of 2.8 billion (+23%), but it is the Premier League that has generated the highest revenues: 7.14 billion (+11% between 20022 and 2023). Followed by LaLiga at 3.65 billion (+9%) and the Bundesliga (3.61 billion, +12%).
The forecast for 2024 sees an overall revenue growth of 9.7%. In 2023, therefore, overall television revenues amounted to 8.2 billion euros. Television revenues for Serie A amount to one billion, compared to 3.2 billion for the Premier League1.3 billion from LaLiga, one billion from Bundesliga. The growth forecast for TV revenues in 2024 is 7.2% compared to a +12% for commercial revenues, which in 2023 amount to a total of 8.9 billion (810 million for Serie A, 2.2 billion for the Premier League, 1.1 billion for LaLiga and 1.4 for the Bundesliga).
Commercial revenues, therefore, contribute much more than television to overall turnover, with merchandising proving to be one of the segments with the greatest growth.
