Three assists: Draisaitl now has 999 goal contributions in the NHL
After winning with Edmonton in Toronto, German ice hockey star Leon Draisaitl can now achieve a special mark.
Leon Draisaitl is close to reaching 1,000 goals in the North American ice hockey league NHL. The 30-year-old from Cologne contributed three assists to his Edmonton Oilers’ 6-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, while Connor McDavid excelled for the guests with two goals and one assist. After 416 goals and now 583 assists, Draisaitl has a total of 999 scorer points from 822 games.
The best German ice hockey player in history can now reach another milestone in his NHL career on Monday night (1:00 a.m. CET). Then the Oilers play their next game at the Montreal Canadiens. So far, 102 players have scored at least 1,000 points in the NHL.
Already more than twice as many points as Sturm
“This is certainly something I never thought would be possible – something that was just a dream,” said Draisaitl after his team’s 15th win of the season in their 32nd game. “To do it now, hopefully in the near future, is something that is difficult to explain,” the attacker added.
“It’s impressive how quickly he did it,” said his teammate and long-time strike partner McDavid. Draisaitl is currently playing his twelfth NHL season and wants to finally fulfill his dream of winning the Stanley Cup for the first time.
Even without the NHL championship, he has long been by far the best German scorer in the strongest league in the world. Marco Sturm, the current coach of the Boston Bruins, has collected 487 points from goals and assists.
