It smells like a work stoppage, you say?
On this Friday evening just before Christmas, we learned which major baseball teams were going to have to pay the luxury tax on the sidelines of the 2025 season. There are nine of them.
From the lot? Three clubs that missed the series: the Rangers, the Astros and… the Mets.
Obviously, the amount for the Mets is bigger than for the Texas clubs. The Astros, Rangers and Red Sox all have a bill of less than two million dollars. The Padres are close to $7M.
The Blue Jays are at $13.6 million.
But for the top-4, it is intense. The Phillies are at $56 million, the Yankees are at $61 million, the Mets are at $91 million… and the Dodgers, for their part, are at $169.375768 million.
Note that 12 clubs do not even have a payroll as big as the Dodgers’ luxury tax.
Last year, the Dodgers footed a $103 million bill. It was a record for the luxury tax, which means that this year, it’s obviously also a record.
There is, however, a direct correlation between paying over $100 million in luxury tax and winning the World Series. You can’t blame the Dodgers for not wanting to win.
But for some markets, it’s hard to follow.
- Will the Japanese go to San Diego?
- The Orioles are not finished.
- Will he go to the World Classic?
