There is a sprint relay, sprint and 10 kilometer interval start on the schedule when the World Cup now leaves the Nordics and moves south towards the Alps – and the World Cup town of Davos.
The Swedish squad is selected and ready for tough competitions at altitude.
– In the sprint events sprint relay and sprint skate, we have fond memories of Davos. Last year Jonna Sundling won the sprint and Jonna together with Emma Ribom also took home the team sprint, where we also had Johan Häggström and Edvin Anger on the men’s podium, says national team manager Anders Byström.
Davos also promises excitement in the individual sprint, where the Swedish women’s team offers stiff competition – where five ladies have already been on the World Cup podium in sprints this year. On the men’s side, there are several active players chasing Olympic places, with among others Marcus Grate back in the squad, as well as Emil Danielsson, Anton Grahn and George Ersson in the squad.
– The weekend’s competitions of course get a little extra nerve as there are Olympic selections in the pot, and the Swedish Olympic Committee (SOC) will present the Olympic places in the coming week, says Anders Byström.
Sunday offers a distance and 10 kilometer interval start where, among others, Moa Ilar is chasing new podium places and a coveted place in the Olympic squad, after great successes in both Ruka and Trondheim. Moa Lundgren and Elina Rönnlund are also back at the World Cup and ready to start in this weekend’s competitions.
At the same time as the World Cup is being decided in Davos, the Scandinavian Cup is taking place in Östersund, which means that several actives who are chasing places for the Tour de Ski are prioritizing the Scandinavian Cup over Davos during the coming weekend.
Ebba Andersson also plans to compete at home in Östersund.
– As planned, some of the Olympic-ready skiers choose to stand over Davos. It has been part of their planning not to go up high now, but instead to have a good training period before the Tour de Ski. At the same time, skiers who could have participated in the Davos competitions have instead chosen to take the chance to qualify for the Tour de Ski via the Scandinavian Cup, says Anders Byström.
Alvar Myhlback competes in the premiere of the Ski Classics in Bad Gastein and therefore forgoes Davos.
The World Cup in Davos runs from 12–14 December. Follow the competitions in Viaplay Sport.
