To talk about D’Angelo Russell is to talk about a past that was never present and no longer has a future. Immersed in his 11th season as a professional, the base has become an absolute toxic productbut also in constant and permanent transfer flesh, going from one place to another without taking root anywhere, being the scapegoat almost always with reason and surviving as best he can in an NBA in which, surprisingly, he continues. Approaching 30 years old, he had an unquestionable talent that he never developed. And now he limits himself to watching life pass by while it curdles, very occasionally, a magical night that no longer justifies (if it ever has) the adventures to which he subjects the teams to which he belongs. Five different ones in more than a decade. Without pain or glory, with more than one disaster and without almost ever being able to get anything positive out of it.
The Mavericks signed D’Angelo looking to replace those months in which Kyrie Irving He was going to be injured and the point guard position was orphaned. That’s how they are, anyway, since Luka Doncic was inexplicably transferred on February 1in a movement that shook the foundations of the NBA. Russell also arrived in one of the last actions carried out by Nico Harrison, who made the departure of the Slovenian and was recently fired (it lasted quite a while) for having literally sent the Texan franchise to ruin. And the brand new signing has been left lost in the desert while chaining one regrettable performance after anotherespecially at launch. A disaster within the disaster that is the Mavericks, a team adrift.
Russell averages 11.2 points (the lowest number of his sports career), 2.6 rebounds and 4.3 assists per nightwith barely 40% in field goals and a very sad 28.7% in triples. And he has had some good performances: 24 points and 6 passes to the basket against the Raptors, 31 against the Pistons, 28 against the Clippers (with 6 rebounds and 5 assists) or 23 with the rival Knicks. But his level has almost always been very poor in the 21 games played, only 1 as a starter: he plays fewer and fewer minutes due to the defensive problems that his presence permanently poses (something that is not new), his anarchy prevents him from fitting into Jason Kidd’s scheme (if you have it) and his decision management or shot selection is permanently questioned. The never-ending story for a player with pretensions of greatness, who does not progress nor cares about doing so.

Selected second overall in the 2015 NBA draft by the Los Angeles Lakers, Russell has always bounced around from place to place. With the Angelenos he was in two different stages, just like with the Nets. And along the way he has passed through Minnesota or even Golden State. But his ability to cause problems has always been greater than to propose solutions, and when it seemed like he was going to take off (21.1 points for the Nets in 2018-19 and All Star), he declined again. The difference is that Anthony Davis o Klay Thompson In their day they were something, they won rings and collected brands and some other records. While D’Angelo Russell remains the same as always: nothing at all.
