Cowboys Release Trevon Diggs: NFL News & Impact

(Frisco) The Cowboys released cornerback Trevon Diggs on Tuesday, bringing a premature end to a tumultuous final season.

His career in Dallas never lived up to his 2021 season, in which he threw 11 interceptions and was named to the All-Star team. Diggs will become a free agent after going on waivers.

This decision comes five days before the Cowboys’ final game of the season (7-8-1), Sunday, against the New York Giants. The Texan squad is already assured of missing the playoffs for a second season in a row.

The season began with Diggs on the field in the first game, a quicker-than-expected return from his recovery from his second major knee surgery in two years.

Diggs missed eight games after suffering a concussion in an accident at his home. He waited two months before explaining the incident to journalists, saying he had been hit on the head by a fixing pole while installing a television.

The Cowboys had indicated that Diggs’ late return was mainly due to knee problems.

Asked during his absence about the criteria for Diggs’ return to the field, head coach Brian Schottenheimer said the sixth-year player needs to be consistent in many aspects, both in practice and in meetings. Owner Jerry Jones, for his part, mentioned, towards the end of his absence, that Diggs was not sufficiently recovered from his injuries to play.

A source familiar with the matter told The Associated Press that the decision regarding Diggs was not linked to a specific incident. According to the person, who requested anonymity, the 27-year-old’s departure was the result of several factors, including his performance and off-field issues.

The Cowboys withheld a workout bonus from Diggs’ contract after he spent the previous offseason rehabbing his latest knee injury with his own medical staff. He was also left on the bench by Schottenheimer at the start of the season, for reasons the coach never fully explained.

Diggs was already expected to be released this off-season as part of a cost-cutting measure, three years after signing a US$97 million contract extension.
