Coco Gauff won her second Grand Slam title in 2025, but according to former professional player Rennae Stubbs that is not enough to achieve her ambitious goals. “If she wants to win twenty Grand Slams, she has to win two every year for ten years,” Stubbs said on her podcast.
The 20-year-old won the French Open this year after already winning the US Open in 2023. There was also a WTA 1000 title and two other final appearances at this level. She finished the season in third place in the world rankings – behind Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek.
However, Stubbs expressed that Gauff may be disappointed despite the successes: “She’ll be super disappointed in a lot of ways, but then I’m also like, no… the reason I see it differently is because she said herself that she wants to win the most Grand Slams. Those are her words, not mine.”
Mentally strong, playful with weaknesses
Stubbs praised Gauff’s attitude towards winning, but also sees playful problems: “Coco is such a balanced person. She also talked about it: ‘I know that winning doesn’t define me as a person.’ She’s emphasized that a lot this year.”
She added: “In that respect she would see this year as a success: I’m making a lot of money, I’ve won another major title. However, we’ve also seen the breakdowns, the crying on the court, the double faults, the forehand problems. Coco has had a typical Coco year – sometimes unbelievable, sometimes inexplicable.”
Stubbs is convinced that Gauff can continue to improve her game: “If she sees this year as a learning year, like Sabalenka does, then it was a good year to see where she can improve in 2026. There are many aspects of her game that can get even better.”
