In a move that’s generating buzz across the Mexican football landscape, defender Abraham Villegas is reportedly set to leave Tapatío, the development squad of the Guadalajara Sports club, to join León starting with the closing Tournament in 2026.While an official announcement from the Guadalajara club is still pending, sources indicate Villegas will make the switch on a one-year loan deal, complete with an option for a permanent transfer.
This potential transfer, first reported by journalists César Luis Merlo and Francisco montes, could represent a shrewd piece of business for León, frequently enough referred to as “La Fiera” (the Beast). According to insights from communicator Miguel Pérez, if León exercises its purchase option in December, it would be a significant financial win for the club. Pérez highlighted on his X account that Villegas joined the “Sacred Flock” (a nickname for Guadalajara) without any transfer fee. He came to Chivas for free,he ended up taking ownership in Tapatío and,if the purchase was made from león,it would be practically pure profit. Another positive point that the subsidiary,Tapatío,would be giving to the club, but we have to see how it happens.
While the exact valuation remains undisclosed, it’s speculated that Club Deportivo Guadalajara could command a fee exceeding $2 million USD.
Villegas’ Impressive Stint with Tapatío in the 2025 Apertura Tournament
At just 22 years old, Abraham Villegas has carved out a reputation as a promising left-back. He was a standout performer for Tapatío during the 2025 Apertura Tournament, logging an impressive 988 minutes across 13 appearances, with 11 of those coming as a starter. This consistent playing time underscores his development and readiness for a new challenge.
It’s certainly worth noting that Villegas’ journey to Tapatío was relatively recent. He was acquired by Chivas last summer after a stint with the red devils of Toluca. His time with Toluca saw him progress through their youth ranks, starting with the U-19 squad and eventually earning a spot on their first team before making the move to Guadalajara’s system.
